Snow Emergency Procedures

During snowstorms, the Village encounters numerous obstacles to its snow removal operations. The following information is being provided to help alleviate these problems during future snowstorms;

  • All public sidewalks adjacent to private property must be cleared of snow within 10 hours of the end of the snowfall. It is the responsibility of the property owner or tenant to see that the sidewalks are cleared.
  • Private snow clearing operations (i.e.; shoveling, plowing, etc.) may not cause snow to be deposited in the public roadway. Property owners or tenants will be held responsible for private plow contractors who deposit material in the public right of way.
  • Village plow operations are for the sole purpose of clearing public roadways and lots. Parking lot ingress, egress and aisles are plowed not individual parking spaces.
  • Vehicles that are left on the roadways overnight or extending into the roadways or right-of-way during snow emergencies are subject to towing, ticketing or being plowed in depending upon location and circumstances.

In addition to the above, property owners and tenants may be subject to summonses for violations of the Village Code.

Even though Village personnel works continuously during snow events performing snow-clearing operations, much of their effort is thwarted by snow from the private property being re-deposited onto the roadways by property owners or their contractors. This material is then subject to freezing, and in turn, makes additional clearing operations by the Village more difficult and the roads more hazardous.

It is requested that you follow the above guidelines to help minimize these conditions in the future and to help snow clearing operations proceed in a safe, timely and efficient manner.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
